Watch ZZ Top Bassist Elwood Francis Play 17 String Bass Live

ZZ Top 17-String Bass

ZZ TOP has always been known for some fun guitars, including fuzzy guitars, fringed, and more.

Now Elwood Francis has taken things to a whole new level, bringing out a 17-string bass to play “Got Me Under Pressure” with the band in Huntsville, AL on November 5th.

This isn’t just something he brought out and then switched to a normal bass for the song, he plays the whole song on it, switching between the top and bottom of the next. You can even see Billy Gibbons giving him looks as he plays, almost like, “I can’t believe you’re playing that!”

How did he come to have this bass?

“I was doing night internet searching [and] turned up a picture of this crazy 17 string bass. I sent a picture to Billy and we laughed about it and made some jokes about actually trying to use it.”

—  Elwood Francis to Ultimate Classic Rock

After all the jokes...one day, Billy Gibbons showed up to practice with it, and here’s the result.

Enjoy!
