TULSA, Okla. — Perry’s Meats and Food Store has closed down after serving Tulsa for more than 80 years.
Sherry Hoort’s father opened Perry’s in the 1940′s. The business was passed down to her brother, who recently passed away. Hoort says no one in the family is able to take over the business and the decision to close was not an easy one.
“It’s very emotional. we met with the employees last night to tell them. it was hard on everybody,” said Hoort.
Hoort remembers working at Perry’s as a teenager. She says their relationship with customers is what makes this place a Tulsa icon. “I think they paid me 75 cents an hour, back then, in the 60s, but even back then, it was the same. we had loyal customers.”
Perry’s sits in the heart of Tulsa’s Market District. The area was recently included in a $7 million dollar beautification project spearheaded by the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation. Hoort hopes that Perry’s building will be renovated into another popular icon in the city.
